Welcome to the 2024-25 curling season!

Historic and Rare Feat(s)!!

Two double-rink teams from the Rideau Curling Club have made history by securing both the prestigious Governor General’s Trophy and the Lady Tweedsmuir Trophy in the same year, a remarkable achievement for our club!

The Governor General’s Trophy, established in 1874, for men’s double-rink teams, and the Lady Tweedsmuir Trophy, introduced in 1938 for ladies’ double-rink teams, represent two of the most esteemed club curling competitions in the country. Winning both titles in the same season is a rare feat that highlights the depth of talent, teamwork, and dedication within the Rideau Curling Club.

The Lady Tweedsmuir Trophy-winning team featured:

  • Team Gardner (Jaimee Gardner, Alyssa Blad, Christine MacGregor, and Laura Wittich); and
  • Team Thorne (Lindsey Thorne, Melissa Gannon, Emily Kelly, and Mychelle Zahab)

The Ladies showcased resilience and excellence on the ice to secure their historic win.  It is the first time that the Rideau Ladies have won the Lady Tweedsmuir Trophy, even though the club was instrumental in establishing this competition in 1938.

The Governor General’s Trophy-winning team featured:

  • Team Goold (John Goold, Jeff Gordon, Peter Wright, and Ben Ripley); and
  • Team Blad (Bill Blad, Chris Fulton replacing for Brett Lyon-Hatcher for the finals, Steve Demers, and Bert Michaud)

The men delivered outstanding performances throughout the competition. This is the seventh win for the Rideau men (1918/19,1953/54, 1970/71, 1993//94,1995/96, 2018/19 and now 2024/25).

The double win is a rare feat.  It is only the second time a club has won both the Governor General Trophy and the Lady Tweedsmuir Trophy in the same year. The Ottawa Curling Club accomplished this feat in 1947/48 - seventy-seven years ago! In another rarity, it is likely the first father-daughter duo (Bill Blad and Alyssa Blad)  to win the trophies together at the same event.

Congratulations to both our double-rink teams and thanks for representing the Rideau so well - we are all so proud of your accomplishment!
